Buca di Beppo
A visit to Buca di Beppo in the Portofino shopping center on I-45 just north of The Woodlands reminded me of a visit to my Uncle Tony and Aunt Santa's basement in Brooklyn where friends and family would get together for home-cooked meals. Boy, I miss those days!!!
My wife and I visited Buco di Beppo on a Friday evening and the place was bustling with activity. It appeared most of the activity was from large groups of friends, co-workers and families. You could just feel the energy of a good time being had by all. Wine was flowing. Music was playing. Each table seemed to have the ringleader who was directing the flow of conversation at the table. One table seemed louder than the next. But in a good, enjoyable way as there was plenty of laughter. I could just hear my Uncle Tony saying "Santa, when do we eat?"
The menu is full of mouth-watering Italian dishes. Not the fancy, high-end dining dishes with a small piece of spiced up meat, three pieces of a vegetable and morsels of pasta that leave you wanting more. Buco's menu items were for home-style, stick to your ribs family-size plates of chicken parmigiana, large bowls of various pastas, platters of fried calamari and mouth-watering desserts for three or four. Of course, the ever-satisfying spaghetti and meatballs and several pizzas are available as well. Oh, and don't forget their fabulous salads. It's amazing that Aunt Santa cooked enough for 30-40 people at a time!
Stopping to look at the walls in the multitude of dining rooms at Buco seemed like a walk down memory lane. Actually, the photos of old-school Italians could very well be relatives of mine. Hey, there's my Grandfather and Uncle Nick! Aren't those the nick-knacks in my Mom's china cabinet? Yes, Buco di Beppo makes you feel right at home. Let's not forget the outstanding service by the waitstaff and management who always seemed to be stopping by the table and assisting the waitstaff through the evening. You won't find the manager standing by the podium up front taking names. He's the one moving faster than everyone.
Take it from this Brooklyn-born Italian, Buco di Beppo is an Italian restaurant that should not be missed. And, don't forget to bring your friends and family for great food and a great time. Yes, that's Frank Sinatra singing My Way in the background.
